Welcome to the RCM History 9 Course Website.
If you are visiting the website, I'd like to welcome you and I hope you enjoy the sneak preview of the course website. Although you will be able to look at the menu and submenus, you will not be able to view the content on the pages; as you must be registered for the course. However, feel free to view the home page, the Course Outline page, and the Sneak Preview page, which will give you a general overview of the Course Website. The General Overview to the course website will give you a feel of what appears on the pages once you have registered for the course. You will find these viewable pages under the Home Menu above.
If you have registered for the course, I look forward to working with you on your History studies. Please take a look around the course website and get familiar with it. Once you log into the website with the provided password, you will be able to access all the pages on the course website.
The course website is the official course website for both the Online Course and the In-class Course. The Course Website is divided into a number of sections/menus. I'll explain the purpose and use of each.
Home Page: This is the page you are on now, and can be viewed by the public. Any major announcements will be presented at the top of this page under the "Welcome" banner. This may involve reminders of upcoming quizzes or tests, approaching deadlines, announcement of upcoming holidays etc. So this will be an important area to check to stay in touch with the events that are happening throughout the year.
Course Schedule: This page is geared more to those taking the In-Class version of the course. This will let you know the topic we will be discussing for each week. It will give you a general overview of what is to be covered. From here you will then go to the appropriate section and unit of the course website.
Introduction: This will be the first unit that we will discuss in class. If you want to work ahead and do some of this on your own, feel free to do so.
Historical Periods: The main content of this course is divided into four historical time periods. Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and Modern Era. Under each of these menus you will find the information pertaining to the particular composer and work that i required for the exam. Under each composer, you will find the following submenus: Notes, Score, Assignment, and Review.
Quizzes: Throughout the course there will be quizzes and tests. These usually occur at the completion of studying each Historical period. Advance notice will be given when these are to take place. The quiz and tests will only be accessible for a short length of time. So it is important to do the quiz/test within that time frame. If for some reason it is impossible to write the quiz/test during that time, please contact me so that alternate arrangements can be made to accommodate your schedule. When doing the quiz and tests, students are on their honour and are asked not look up the information in their notes, or online. The quizzes/tests will include identification of musical excerpts, both visually and aurally, short and long answer questions, true and false, multiple choice, and essay questions.
Resources: The course uses a number of online resources. It is under this section that you will gain access to these online resources. While some resources are free others require a subscription and password to access their website. This password will be provided after you have registered for the course (for online students) or once the course begins (for In-class students). In most cases, the resources will take you to a secondary website.
Glossary: Terms play a huge role in music history. There are many facets required to receive full marks in defining terms on the exam. The glossary contains the required terms for the final history exam. You will notice that I have started you off with a few definitions. Ideally, you will create your own definition for each term and submit it as part of your review. More will be explained about this as we progress through the course.
As you look through the website you will notice that under some headings there are not any submenus; as you work through the course the various pages will be revealed (e.g the quiz and Exam section).
For those of you who have already registered for the course, take a look around the website, familiarize yourself where everything is and never hesitate to contact me with any questions or concerns you may have. I look forward to working with you. Enjoy the course.
For those visiting the course website, thank you for stopping by and if you have any questions, please do not hesitate to contact me.

- Notes: This is where you will Explore the Information about the composer and work to be studied. This may entail viewing an embedded powerpoint presentations, downloading extra notes and handouts, viewing online videos, and the reading assignment in the text. Not every unit will comprise of the exact same Exploration of Information.
- Sound: This is where you will Explore the Sound. With some units the Explore the Sound and Explore the Score will be separate submenus, while other units may have grouped them together. In most units you will be asked to listen to the music first, before you finish Exploring the Information. It will be the Sound submenu that you visit to hear the recording. Many times this will take you to a secondary website, Naxos Music Online, where you will need the given password to enter. In other units, there may be video clips of a performance to listen and watch; as well as a link to listen to the work on Naxos Music Online. You will also access this section once you have completed Explore the Score, and again for the Reviews and Assignments.
- Score: This is where you will Explore the Score. With some units the Explore the Sound and Explore the Score will be separate submenus, while other units may have grouped them together. It is this section where you will download and print your copy of the scores to follow along with the recordings. You will also mark the score with key features of the work. In most cases, it is best to print off the score before beginning the unit, or attending the in-studio class.
- Review: This is the Explore and Review. In most units, this will be an online review where you will fill in the fields to review what you have learned. The reviews will consist of short and longer answer questions, true and false and multiple choice. When you have completed the review, you will then submit the review for marking. I'll look over the review, make comments and feedback, and then send it back to you via email. Ideally, it would be great to try and do the review without opening the book, but in essence, I'd rather you look up the correct answer than submitting a review with all wrong answers. If there are too many errors on the review, it will be sent back to you and you'll be asked to redo the review before any feedback is offered. The reviews usually comprise of questions found on past RCM examinations - although the format may change, the content will reflect what has appeared on past exams.
- Assignment: This is the Explore and Create section of each unit. This is actually quite a crucial part of each unit and is not one to skip. There will be various activities that will be assigned for you to do. These activities will then become your study notes for the final exam. Although there are certain standard activities which will accompany every unit, with other units, the activities will change. In the first number of units we'll explore different activities and ultimately, you can then decide which activity is going to help you the most for the exam. So there will be options to this section of the unit as we progress throughout the course.
